Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common cause of vision loss in older adults. It happens when the central part of the retina (called the macula) gets damaged due to the hardening of small arteries that supply it with oxygen and nutrients. There are two main types of AMD: Dry and Wet.
Dry Macular Degeneration is the most common, making up 85-90% of cases. It causes a slow, gradual loss of vision. In this type, small yellow deposits called *drusen* appear between the layers of the retina. Many people over 50 have some drusen as they age. Frequent eye check-ups are recommended to monitor these deposits, as there is a risk that Dry AMD could progress to the more severe Wet AMD.
Wet Macular Degeneration is more serious and can lead to significant vision loss. It happens when new, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina (known as neovascularization). These vessels are fragile and can leak or bleed, causing the macula to swell and scar. This can result in a severe, often irreversible loss of central vision.
At Dadar Eye Center, our physicians and surgeons offer in-office exams and testing for AMD. We also work with your primary care doctor and retina specialists to ensure you receive the right care. This may include retina injection treatments with medications like Lucentis®, Eylea®, or Beovu® to help maintain your vision and prevent further loss. With regular eye exams, early detection, and treatment, it is often possible to stop or slow vision loss caused by AMD.
